Eight works on paper by Lucas Neyt, from the swift, reduced line of a seated woman to the layered bistre of a standing nude, the crossing lines of the fencers at the Kruispoort and the anchor cemetery of Praia do Barril. Together they show what drives his practice: catching form with immediacy and precision.

Drawn with quick, powerful lines: the figure of a woman is called up by a handful of strokes against a dark ground.

A quick sketch in bistre: a silhouette with dark contours and contrasting patches of white, in a fine, upright pose.

Abstract work made in the fencing hall at the Kruispoort in Bruges: the movement of the fencers becomes a play of crossing lines.

Seated nude, drawn on 14 January 2014.

A figure and its shadow, built up in pencil and ink and finished with acrylic.

The anchor cemetery of the tuna fishermen at Praia do Barril, in the south of Portugal.

An almost abstract work. In Lucas’s words: “I often start from an object in nature, which then slowly disappears, as it were, into an abstract work.”
